Where did you get the inspiration and ideas for the Swords of Destiny?
命運之劍的靈感從何而來?

The Swords of Destiny was an idea that began to develop during my early days on the original EverQuest team. I was working in Freeport on a quest that involved the faction known as the Knights of Truth and their arch-nemesis, Sir Lucan D’Lere. I wanted the knights to be the sworn protectors of an ancient force that they did not even fully understand, but their faith would drive them. I eventually developed a story around the magical blade we now know as Soulfire. Unfortunately, my duties on EQ shifted before I could reveal more of the true lore behind Soulfire. The EQ Soulfire was the first in-game glimpse at the Swords of Destiny storyline, but the tale would not continue until EverQuest II arrived.

What does the name ‘The Swords of Destiny’ imply?
命運之劍這個名字有什麼隱含的意義?

The title Swords of Destiny refers to two things, the Age of Destiny and the fate of Norrath. From the dawn of creation to the Age of Cataclysms, few Norrathians had knowledge of the Swords of Destiny. However, in our time, we now find a number of entities on Norrath spreading the legend as they seek to unlock the secrets of the swords.
命運之劍的名稱指向兩件事,命運的年代和諾瑞斯的命運。在變革的年代的早期,只有一小部份的人擁有與命運之劍相關的知識。然而現在有很多團體在諾瑞斯上散佈傳說,同時找尋方法來解開這把劍的秘密。

Can you share with us few details of the story behind the Swords of Destiny?

The Swords of Destiny is a tale of creation and fate. It is a story of the balance of power and petty grievances that permeate every soul in the universe. The tale spans eons and covers epic tragedies and jubilant victories that we may never know in EQ II. The Swords of Destiny is but a piece of a universal puzzle, but to Norrathians, the tale is much more localized.
命運之劍是與創造、宿命有關聯的故事。它訴說了力量的平衡和宇宙裡每個靈魂裡都會有的微小痛苦的故事。它橫跨了無限的時間,包含了我們可能沒有機會知道的史詩悲劇和勝利戰役。命運之劍是一個大謎團,但對諾瑞斯上的人們來說,這個故事很有這個世界的特色。

Is there any relation between the Swords of Destiny’s Quest & the Qeynos Claymore Quest Line (from KoS)?

I would rather not reveal the relationship between primary quest lines, odysseys if you like. What I can tell you is that there is a lot of content in EQII that is both directly and indirectly related to the Swords of Destiny. The Swords of Destiny is also a clue to a greater enigma. We have always known where we are going in the Age of Destiny and as we march along that path, clues will rain down upon Norrathians. So, yes, the Qeynos Claymore is somehow associated to the Swords of Destiny.
這些主要的任務線間是否有相互關聯,最好不是我透露出來的,而是讓有興趣的人來挖掘。我只能說在無盡的任務二裡面,有很多內容都直接或間接的和命運之劍有關係。命運之劍也是另一個更大的謎團的線索。我們已經知道在命運的年代裡,我們要往什麼方向前進,更多的線索將隨著事件的發展而出現。所以是可以說奎諾斯Claymore和命運之劍之間有某種程度的關係。

Can you tell us a bit about the factions involved in the Swords of Destiny?
你是否可以告訴我們一些命運之劍牽扯到的名聲呢?

One faction I truly enjoyed bringing into the world is the Circle of the Unseen Hand. In the original EverQuest, the Hand was a thieves’ guild located in the lawful city of Qeynos. As you might guess, over a period of 400 years, the law discovered them and booted them out of the city, but that was not the end of the Hand. They evolved into a global thieves’ guild that maintains secret guild taverns in every major city on Norrath. These taverns are safe houses for not only the members of the Hand, but for their allies or those willing to earn the right to carry one of the valuable tavern coins. In the Swords of Destiny we get a greater glimpse of Crow’s Resting Place, the Hand tavern located beneath the lawful city of Qeynos. You just can’t keep a good thief away.

Other than the Hand you will encounter the Order of Marr and possibly even the League of Freethinkers. Of these two organizations, one is an ancient order sworn to a secret code of honor while the other is a clandestine organization of monster slayers. There is also a chance you will meet new agents of darkness known as the Libant.
除了the Hand之外,你還有機會跟Order of Marr甚至是the League of Freethinkers的人打交道。一個是服從秘密榮譽法典的古老組織,另一個是一群私底下暗殺怪物的團隊。你也有機會遇到一個來自於Libant的黑暗使者。

What is your personal favorite quest in the Swords of Destiny series?
你最喜歡哪一個命運之劍任務線裡的任務?

I do not really have a favorite quest in the odyssey of the Swords of Destiny. My favorite part is getting out the lore to the people and planting my hooks for future tales. I do have favorite npc’s in the story. Two of my favorites were Inspector Berlok Beeglesnoop and Chypp the talking rat. As with most npc’s I create, you never know when you will be meeting them again, but you will most likely bump into them again.
我 其實沒有特別喜愛的任務。我最喜歡的事情是把傳說散播給人們和設下未來故事的伏筆。不過在故事中有我喜愛的角色,就是調查家Berlock Beeglesnoop和會說話的老鼠Chypp。我創造出很多角色,你從來不會知道會在什麼時候再度遇到他們,不過有機會跟他們不期而遇是很開心的事。

What are a few of the surprises that players should look forward to?
有沒有玩家應該要期待的驚喜呢?

Players can look forward to speaking to Norrathian personalities that they thought they would never get a chance to speak with. They can also look forward to being introduced to a secret the Queen of Felwithe has been keeping for a long time, a key to destiny.
玩家們可以期待跟一些特別的人交談,特別是那些他們從來沒想過的人。他們還有機會知道菲爾維斯女王保守很久的秘密,一把跟宿命有關的鑰匙。

What are the difficulties and challenges that you encountered during this project?
你在做這個專案時有遇到什麼困難或挑戰?

The greatest challenge was finding the time. I monitor the lore on EQII so I usually get involved in lore creation and review between expansions and live content while still trying to implement content. I can often find myself working on the past present and future content of EQII. To help alleviate some of the pressure, I decided to introduce the Swords of Destiny to the game world in chunks rather than all at once. It would have been impossible to complete the quest line by the launch of EoF.
最 大的挑戰是空出時間來。我負責管理無盡的任務二裡面的傳說故事,包括資料片和各種內容相關的傳說故事的創造及檢閱工作,同時又要實作內容。我常常發現我同 時在做EQII的過去、現在和未來的故事內容。為了減輕時間上的壓力,我決定分段釋出命運之劍的任務,要在EoF上市之前就把全部的任務線完成實在是不太 可能的事。

Names have power.
名字蘊含著力量。

It’s strange how the sound of a single word or the sight of a particular arrangement of letters on a page can instantly give rise to a wide array of feelings.
很難解釋,聽見一個字或是看到特殊字母的組合可以在一瞬間引發多深的情緒。

Some names have more power than others.
某些名字擁有比其他名字更多的力量。

Neriak.
奈瑞克。

It’s an exceptionally strong name. For me, at least, it’s in hearing it out loud. Three syllables that contain a sense of dark malevolence, raise tales of intrigues unending, and bring forth images of a race of people whose ambition is outmatched only by their ruthlessness and cunning.
這是一個特別有力的名字。至少對我來說,它聽起來是如此響亮。三個音節裡涵蓋了惡毒的思想,無止盡的陰謀,和只能靠著無情殘忍的狡猾伎倆來滿足自己野心的黑暗精靈一族。

There’s another name that may not be familiar, but it too plays a significant part in what’s coming.
另外一個不那麼為人所知,但在接下來要發生的事扮演著重要角色的名字。

Arasai.

It’s a lighter sound, which is fitting for what it describes. It also sounds as if that lightness has been twisted. Meticulously developed, or crafted, if you will. Like a fine weapon on display.
這名字聽起來如此輕盈,正合適於它所要表達出的樣子,又像是以往的明亮已被扭曲。它是被精心製造出來,或說是打造出來的。像是展示中的完美武器。

As many of you have no doubt guessed, I’m talking about the next major live content release for EverQuest II. We’ve talked a lot over the past year about our commitment to making sure there’s always something interesting going on in Norrath. What’s coming takes that even further.
就像很多人所預測的,我說的是EQ2即將到來的重大更新。我們在過去一年提過很多次,保證諾瑞斯上會不斷的進行著各式各樣有趣的事。即將到來的更新又進一步的實現了這個承諾。

With Echoes of Faydwer, we had hoped that people would enjoy a return to a more traditional MMO starting experience, and were pleased with the results. We got a lot of positive reaction by introducing the starting city of Kelethin inside of Greater Faydark, as well as a new race, the Fae.

Later this month, we’ll be releasing the largest free content addition that EQ2 has ever seen. The complement to that experience: The city of Neriak, the large outdoor zone of Darklight Wood, and a new playable race, the Arasai, one of the races who will be able to start there.

These zones are another collaboration with our SOGA studio in Taiwan, the same studio that developed the characters and environments for The Fallen Dynasty. Their artists working in conjunction with our designers and artists have really brought Neriak back to life.
這些區域是再一次和台灣的SOGA studio合作的成果,在此之前我們曾經和SOGA studio通力完成The Fall Dynasty的角色和環境開發。他們的美術人員和我們的設計師一起工作,這些美術人員成功的將奈瑞克重現於世。

We decided to go this direction for a couple reasons. As we were developing the storyline for Faydwer, we saw the potential both in gameplay and story development for a dark, twisted shadow of the Fae, and we’ve wanted to explain a few important things about this area of the world for quite some time.

We pick up the story of Neriak 300 years ago.

It was no secret even then that Queen Cristanos Thex of Neriak was the embodiment of malevolent ambition. So close to the crown and ultimate power over her own kind, but it was destined to pass her by. When King Tearis’ time came, the empire would fall to the hands of her son, Prince Talvus Thex.
奈瑞克的王后Cristanos Thex是有著惡毒心腸的野心家早就不是秘密。即使她距離王冠以及暗精裡最大的權力如此接近,卻註定只能和這些擦身而過。因為一但國王Tearis的時間到了,整個帝國將會落入她的兒子Talvus Thex王子的手中。

While the War of the Fay raged, with the Crown Prince and his father otherwise occupied in Faydwer, the Queen saw her opportunity and exploited it mercilessly. It wasn’t long before both King Tearis and his son fell to mysterious circumstances in combat.
當War of the Fay慘烈的進行著,王子和他的父親分別佔領著費朵之時,王后毫不留情的善用了這個機會。不久之後國王Tearis和他的兒子雙雙的就在戰鬥時落入難以理解的情況。

Cristanos seized the power she had long desired, ending the Thex Dynasty in one final, brutal stroke.
Cristanos以無情的一擊結束了Thex王朝,獲得了長久以來她所渴望的權力。

(“Two, actually,” she would later recount to her most trusted priestess.)

Neriak, however, would not remain unscathed for long under her rule.

It’s not entirely certain what allowed the Leatherfoot Raiders of Rivervale to pose the threat that they did to Neriak. Some say it was assistance from foreigners from the outermost quarter of the city, others whispered that the Teir’Dal had been betrayed by those who remained loyal to the King, and yet others credit the assault on Nektulos by the Kithicor Rangers. In the end, it was no matter. The effect would be the same.
究竟是什麼讓河谷鎮的Leatherfoot Raider能夠對奈瑞克造成威脅,到現在還是眾說紛紜。有些人說是奈瑞克訪客區裡的外來者助他們一臂之力,私底下的傳言則是Teir’Dal被那些依然 效忠國王的人背叛了,也有些人歸功於基斯可遊俠們在奈克圖羅森林的突擊。只是不管是什麼原因,都不會影響到最終的結果。

At Cristanos’ order, the high priestess Tseralith made use of an artifact known as the Hand of Malice summoning forth a beast of great destruction to seal Neriak off from the invaders.
在Cristanos的命令下,女祭司Tseralith使用了Hand of Malice招喚來了有著毀滅性的巨大怪獸來保護奈瑞克不讓侵略者進入。

The surviving invaders gave the ruins that resulted the name “Fallen Gate,” and soon abandoned them to the spirits that rose from the destruction.
存活下來的侵略者將殘留的遺跡稱為Fallen Gate。從這場毀滅中產生的幽靈和這些遺跡,都一併的被遺棄了。

Unbeknownst to the attackers, however, the grand expanse of Neriak Proper was entirely spared.
攻擊者不知道的是,奈瑞克主城區的大部分區域都被完整的保留下來。

Sealed off from her enemies, her people and homeland assumed destroyed, Cristanos has had nothing but time. Freed from influences of the outside, Cristanos only grew more and more malicious, soon thinking of herself as the divine manifestation of Hate to her people – a god in her own right.
Cristanos什麼都失去了,除了擁有無止盡的時間,她的人民和家園都被認為被毀滅了,她並以此來躲避她的敵人。失去了外界的影響,Cristanos卻一日一日的更為狠毒,她開始認為她自己是仇恨的神聖象徵,對她的子民而言,她是全能的神。

To her, you see, the Dark Elves are the “correct” way that Elves should have developed, though most of the races of Norrath consider them a wicked perversion of High Elves.
對她而言,黑暗精靈才是精靈該被發展出來的”正確樣貌”,雖然大部分諾瑞斯上的種族都認為黑暗精靈是邪惡版本的高等精靈。

One day while toying with one of the captured Fae spirit buds she frequently tormented to amuse herself, she realized how perfectly fitting it would be to fix what the old gods had gotten wrong, and set the evolution of the Fae along their “correct” course as well.
有一天當她在玩弄捕捉到的Fae靈魂,折磨它來娛樂自己的時候,她忽然理解到如果她修正舊神所犯的錯誤,把Fae進化跟黑暗精靈一樣的”正確樣貌”,將會是多完美的一件事。

The screams, it is said, were legendary.
那尖叫聲,成為了人們口耳相傳的傳說。

Stormfire

聊到camp怪的經驗,就不能夠不提到Stormfire這把弓。

這把弓是在Stormhold裡的任務獎品,現在的任務是第二版,而我小時候接的,是非常恐怖的第一版。任務的要求其實很簡單,就是殺一些在Stormhold裡的特定怪物或是named,大概要解十幾個任務才會作完。

當時有個好心的高等級玩家,因為要打Sword of Thunder(這又是另外一個故事)找低等級的玩家mentor,我們兩個人為了camp其中一隻named,camp了一整個下午,超過四個小時的時間。這中間不斷的有其他也要打這隻named的玩家加入或放棄離開,當他出現的那個瞬間,我感覺到的解脫遠多於快樂,這隻named可以算是我在遊戲裡最慘痛的camp記憶。

除了很多很難camp的named以外,其中一個任務需要的怪,在Stormhold裡只有固定幾個點有機會生(印象中是四個),一直打不到需要的數量,於是只要有經過Stormhold就會去順道那四個點檢查,去了好幾次才把需要的數量打齊。

任務最後一步的named在Stormhold的最深處,第一次看到他出現的時候,很開心的在公頻找人幫忙,卻被一個高等級的玩家搶怪。然後就是一連串怎麼也殺不到的過程,一直到遊戲作了修正,這隻named變成是有任務的人經過他就會出現,我才順利的把這個任務解掉,拿到那把等了好久好久的弓。

這把弓是唯一到現在還放在銀行裡的低等級物品,我想它會是少數在很久以後我還會記得的EQ2故事其中之一。

人生總是出乎你的意料之外。

因為有事情去買東西,順便在外面吃飯,回家的時候raid已經開始了,而且剛好剩下那麼一個空位。

突然而來的server down訊息讓大家都緊張了起來,試著把每件事都做的再好一點,速度再快一點,期待能在該死的十一點前完成這場raid。

忽然那把弓出現了,在鐘響的兩分鐘前。

事情就這樣發生了 : )

不曉得該怎麼說這個地方才好。

HoS不是個很大的raid zone,裡面有的named不比lab來的少,跟lab完全不同的是,HoS最難的named絕對不是Venekor,可是會掉war bow的卻是Venekor。

每週經歷跟陷阱、trash mob纏鬥的過程,是不是真的值得那把很不會掉的弓呢?在最後那扇門外等待的時候,心中充滿的是想要逃走的衝動。期待的太多,落空的滋味真的很難受。

但我更不能想像的是弓真的出現在箱子裡的那天。

地震

新加坡的朋友在遊戲裡抱怨網路不穩定,很容易就斷線。細問之下才知道地震震斷的海底電纜不只影響了台灣對亞洲的網路連線,也影響了他們對外的網路。

忽然間體會到自己所生活的這塊土地,是那麼確切的存在著的。

聖誕節最重要的事情之一就是裝飾家裡。

聖誕樹是今年Frostfell任務的獎品,禮物、食物跟壁爐都是我做的,還分送了很多烤火雞出去。

在拍照的時候家裡的寵物一直逛來逛去,一直要把他們移走移到很煩,所以叫他們通通裝死不要來破壞畫面。XD

今天看到某個癌症病人的blog,忽然想起這個問題。

「沒能來得及跟EQ2裡認識的朋友見個面,會覺得很遺憾吧」
